Varpio Puutarha Oy ( Varpio ) – Finland

Varpio is located in Orimattila community in South Finland and established in 1987, has a turnover of 1 M€/a (2003). The growing area in the greenhouses is 9 000 m², and the growing takes place year-round. Artificial lighting has an important role in energy balances in greenhouses. The main product is cucumber, and the volume is about 900 000 kg/a. The number of employees is 10 – 20.  Heating of the greenhouses is provided by gas fired (natural gas) boilers. Gas consumption is about 3.600 MWh/a. Electricity consumption is about 3.900 MWh/a.

Role in the project

Compiling the information regarding the current situation of greenhouse energy system in Finland and north of Europe in cooperation with Honkasen and Hevi Kolmio.
